Podcasts have been proven to be a great way to promote your business. It seems that the public’s appetite for podcasts is insatiable. Yet, the idea of creating a podcast may seem daunting, to say the least. In fact, it isn’t that difficult to start your own business podcast. Here’s how to do it.
Gather Your Equipment
To start a business podcast, all you really need is a good microphone and an audio recorder. Luckily, today’s computer’s have both of those built in. Technically, you could even record your podcast on a tablet or a phone. Bear in mind, though, that you’ll want to capture the highest quality audio that you can. With that in mind, your most challenging piece of “equipment” will be the room in which you make your recording.
Choose a Recording Room
Your recording room should have good acoustics. Avoid using a room where there is an echo, or an abundance of street noise or other distractions. If you’re serious about your business podcast, you can invest in a portable sound booth. These consist of modular soundproof panels that can be put together to form a booth in one or two hours. The difference in recording in a regular room and recording in a sound booth is dramatic, and the investment is well worth it.
Choose Your Niche Topic
Depending on your business and what you’re trying to promote, you’ll need to choose a niche topic to discuss. Be sure not to choose anything too narrow, or you’ll soon run out of things to talk about. Try to avoid topics that are too self-promotional, or your podcast will sound like a long commercial. Try to focus on topics that will truly add value to your listener’s lives. The more value you offer, the more popular your podcast will be.
Write a Script
You can, of course, record your podcast “off the cuff.” But if you’re just beginning, this is not likely to be a good idea. After one or two introductory sentences, you’re likely to stumble, which will make you sound unprofessional. Since it’s a business podcast, you want to sound as polished as possible, and a script will allow you to achieve that.
Time Your Podcast
Practice reading your script, and time yourself. You want to make sure your podcast fits in the time that you’ve planned. Most successful podcasts run between 30 and 60 minutes. A middle ground of 45 minutes is safe.
Record Your Podcast
Now you’re ready to record your podcast for yourself first. This will allow you to tweak the recording. You may find that you’re speaking too loud, soft, or not enunciating clearly. Once you have fine tuned your podcast recording, you’re ready to make a final version and upload it to a podcast publishing site, such as YouTube, Audacity, iTunes, or a number of other podcast hosting sites.
Your business podcasts can be a valuable piece of your overall marketing plan. As you continue to create podcasts, you’ll likely discover that listeners respond more to certain ones over others.
